Reggina Calcio is an Italian football club from the city of Reggio Calabria founded in 1914.
Reggina embarked on their way in the lower leagues of Italian football. In the 1964/65 season, they topped the Serie C table and broke into the second division for the first time in their history. The club got off to a flying start finishing 4th in their debut campaign and kept their consistency finishing in the upper half of the table until 1972 when the team found themselves on the downward spiral. They were a footstep away from relegation two seasons in a row and finally slipped to Serie C at the end of 1973/74 campaign.
For the most part of the 1980s and 1990s, Reggina meandered through the lower three divisions. In the 2000s the downturn changed to a rise as the team made a great breakthrough edging into the promotion zone in the 1998/99 season and winning a ticket to the top flight for the first time ever. Except for the 2001/02 campaign, the club spent 9 seasons in Serie A until their relegation in 2009. Since then Reggina plays in Serie B.
Reggina players have dark-red uniforms. That’s why they are nicknamed Amaranto. They play their home matches at Stadio Oreste Granillo which can hold 27,763 spectators.
