History and achievements
Rio Ave Futebol Clube, also known as Rio Ave, is a Portuguese football club. The club was founded in 1939 in Vila do Conde, northern Portugal.
The club is neither the youngest nor the oldest in the history of the Portuguese championship. When it was founded, the national competition was a flourishing one. Afterwards Rio Ave management decided to switch to the priority of developing football in the whole region. Initially the club did not have a football academy. However, a decision was made to create a youth one, which helped the club evolve and perform at a good level in the national championship.
Currently, the club makes rather successful displays on the pitch in Portugal occupying a place in the middle of the tournament table. The 2010/11 season was the most successful for the club as Rio Ave finished 8th in the championship. The best result in the club history dates back to 1982. At that time Rio Ave finished 5th in the national championship and nearly missed out on the European qualification round. Two seasons later the club reached another peak having become a runner-up of the Portuguese Cup. Rio Ave played the final against Porto – one of the Portuguese top clubs – and lost.
The club spent major part of the 90s playing in the second division of Portuguese championship. But since the 2000s Rio Ave has become a more frequent participant of the national top league and performs confidently in it now.
