Club Atlético River Plate is a Uruguayan football club form Montevideo founded in 1932.
The team made their debut in an inaugural Primera División season in 1932. Such legendary players like Severino Varela and Héctor Sena Puricelli made their first professional steps together with the club.
River Plate had a fruitful period during the 1990s. They recorded their best-place runner-up finish in 1992 and kept their consistency by finishing third in the league in 1997. In the 2007/08 season, the team enjoyed even better fortune winning the Torneo Clausura and finishing as runners-up again in the aggregate table. Moreover, the club’s striker Richard Porta established himself as the top scorer of the season with 19 goals.
River Plate made two appearances in the Copa CONMEBOL in 1996 and 1998. They took part in the Copa Sudamericana for three consecutive years since 2008 till 2010 climbing up to the semifinals at the utmost.
River Plate became a feeder club for such world-famous players like Osvaldo Canobbio, Luis Diego López, Edgardo Adinolfi. The team play their home matches at 6,000-seater Estadio Saroldi in Montevideo. It’s a tidbit that the stadium got its name after first goalkeeper Federico Omar Saroldi who tragically died from a serious injury suffered during the game against Central Español.
