Roma football club was founded in 1927 when the three teams Roman, Fortitudo-pro Roma and Alba-Audace merged and gave the world Roma. The merger was performed in order to create a strong squad, able to resist such giants of the Italian football of that time as Juventus, Torino and Genoa.
Lazio was the only team which wasn’t merged into. The merger immediately bore fruits: Roma finished as runner-up behind Juve in the championship. The Romans won the first ‘gold’ of the Italian championship in 1942 under the management of the head coach Alfred Sheffer. Amadeo Amadei, who came from the Roman club, became the best team’s goal scorer.
After World War II the ‘wolves’ faced uneasy times: gradual slump to the bottom of the table in Serie A and unavoidable relegation to Serie B. And though Roma returned to the big league next year, the lesson wasn’t a waste. Moreover the club hasn’t left the big league until today.
In 1955 Roma finished third in the championship under the management of Jesse Carver.
The first success outside the country was achieved only in 1961 when ‘giallorossi’ won the 1961 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup Final beating Birmingham City by 4 to 2. Three years later Roma won Italian Cup beating Torino by 1 to 0. Roma won the second Scudetto in 1983 and after that the football club experienced a definite decline.
In the new millennium Roma managed to recapture its lost positions and won the Scudetto for the third time in 2001.
