History and achievements
FC Rubin is based in the capital of Tatarstan, the beautiful Kazan. It is thought to be one of the strongest Russian football clubs in the 2000s. Rubin’s commonly acknowledged foundation year is 1958; however, few people know professional football came to the region in 1936.
Rubin has set quite a number of records lately. E.g. the Kazan team managed to win in seven straight national championship matches from the start. A modest Tatarstan club sometime earlier, currently Rubin is two-time Russian champion, winner of the 2010 Russian Super Cup and Commonwealth of Independent States Cup.
The 2008 championship became one of the best ones. Next year the team repeated their success and added several other trophies to the collection. Supporters will forever remember the first match between Rubin and Barcelona at Camp Nou. No one ever expected the Kazan team to end at least in a draw, but something unbelievable happened. Rubin defenders with Ryzhikov in the goal denied every furious attack by Zlatan Ibrahimovic & Co. – the much-praised champions managed to score only once. At the same time the modest Tatar club scored two goals thanks to Karadeniz and a stunning 30-meter attempt by Ryazantsev.
Rubin has played in ruby and green for a long time. Although in the Soviet times the club did not have permanent colors for their kit. The word ‘Rubin’ appeared on game jerseys only in 1965. The club emblem was added later but it did not last long. After the breakdown of the Soviet Union a lot has changed in football as well.
Rubin played in low-tier Russian football divisions for many years – all attempts at getting promoted were vain. The new era in the club history apparently began in 1996. The team had a task to get promoted to the first and, eventually, to the top league. Although several attempts were made, finally, Rubin managed to climb the peaks of Russian football.
