San Lorenzo de Almagro is an Argentinean football club located in Boedo neighbourhood, Buenos Aires. San Lorenzo is considered to be the team of the working class.
On April 1, 1908 Catholic priest Lorenzo Massa founded a new club. It was called Club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro because most of the players came from the district of Almagro. The first recorded game took place on April 26, 1914. The club was crowned champions on 3 occasions during the amateur era. In 1933 San Lorenzo delivered its first professional silverware. The title returned to the club in 1946, 1959 and 1968. After the triumph in the 1968 Metropolitano, San Lorenzo was nicknamed los matadores as the club romped to the Primera División crown, losing to no one along the way. The team would go on to win the championship 4 times during the next six years.
However, in 1981 the club`s financial problems led to the sale of the stadium. Later that year the relegation was suffered, followed quickly by promotion. Soon the team moved to a new stadium, situated in the Flores neighborhood of Buenos Aires. In 1995, 2001 and 2007 San Lorenzo claimed league titles. The club also lifted the Copa Mercosur and Copa Sudamericana in 2001 and 2002 respectively.
