History and achievements
Sligo Rovers is a professional football side located in Sligo, Ireland. On 17 September 1928 the club was established as a result of the merger of two junior sides, Sligo Town and Sligo Blues. The club’s home ground is the Showgrounds, which has a capacity of 4,500 people. Red and white are the traditional colors of the team. The club’s notable former footballers include Dixie Dean, Séamus Coleman and Alan Moore. Sligo Rovers is the current Premier Division title holder.
In 1934 Sligo Rovers joined the League of Ireland. From 1937 to 1977 Sligo Rovers experienced one of the finest periods in the club’s history. In 1937 the club won its first league title. In the years of the Emergency the side made its fans happy by signing the legendary Dixie Dean, the most prolific forward in the history of the English football.
In 1977 the team claimed their second league title, thus earning an opportunity to play in the European Cup. In 2009 the club debuted in the UEFA Europa League qualifiers. Sligo Rovers won 3 League of Ireland and 2 First Division titles, 4 FAI Cups, 2 League of Ireland Cups and other trophies.
Sligo Rovers won their first Premier Division title in the 2012 season.
