Sochaux is the club that represents the city of Montbéliard in the Legue 1. The club was established in 1928 by the president of the car manufacturer Jean-Pierre Peugeot who planned to form a team the workers could play in their free time. The president of Sochaux was a champion of the professionalism in French football and as a result the team was one of the first to obtain the professional status.
The first league title came to the club after the season 1934/1935 as it finished atop of the League losing only four games throughout the season. Two years later the club claimed the Coupe de France, but it was the year 1939 that the club captured its second and last championship. After World War Two the team faced a slump and saw a dropping in the class, but it managed to come back after spending only a season in Division 2.
In the 1970s and 1980s the team stayed in the mid position of the table. The last trophy the club claimed was the Coupe de France in 2007 as the team outperformed Marseille in the final.
The home stadium of the team is the Stade Auguste Bonal in Montbéliard that was opened in 1931 as Stade de la Forge but was renamed after World War Two in honor of the Augustu Banal that refused to collaborate with the German troops and was killed. The ground can hold up to 20,000 seats.
The nickname of the club is the Cubs.
