History and achievements
Southampton football club was established in 1885 by the representatives of the St Mary's Church. The club received its name in 1897 and since that moment has a nickname the Saints. The home ground of the team from 1898 till 2001 had been the 'Dell' stadium, but in 2001 Southampton moved to a new 'St Mary's Stadium' with a capacity of 32.000 seats.
In 1894 the club played in the Southern League to celebrate victories in 1897, 1899, 1901, 1903 and 1904. The team was promoted to the second division in 1922 playing in the League till 1953 when it faced a decline and dropped to Division Three. It was not until 1960 that the Saints regained Division Two reaching semifinal of the F.A. Cup the same year.
During the 1960s Southampton fans enjoyed the performance of such players as Alf Ramsey, Terry Paine, Mick Channon, Martin Chivers. Their remarkable skills and talent helped the club to reach the First Division. One of the most memorable moments for the team came in 1976 when Southampton was competing against Manchester United in the FA Cup Final and surprised the whole country beating Red Devils by 1–0. The team came back to Division One in 1978 and the following year gained the final of the English Cup where it was defeated by Nottingham Forest.
In the season 2004/2005 Southampton was relegated to the Championship. The team went down even further and in the 2008/2009 season hardly granted their place in that league. In 2009 a Swiss millionaire Markus Liebherr bought the club and presented the strategy to promote the Saints to the Premier League. A home victory over Coventry City on 28 May 2012 secured a place for the club in the Premier League for the season 2012/2013.
Southampton has a highly successful and productive youth academy. The most famous players include the winger Theo Walcott, defender Wayne Bridge and midfielder Gareth Bale.
