History and achievements
Southern District Recreation & Sports Assn Ltd, also known as Southern or Southern District is a professional football club from Southern District,Hong Kong. Currently the team is playing in the Hong Kong First Division League.
Southern District joined Hong Kong football after entering the newly formed Third District Division League in 2002. The first season proved unsuccessful as the team failed to win promotion to the higher league.
Southern have been gradually developing and as early as in 2007 reached the Third Division League Final Round for the first time in their history, taking the second spot in the Third District Division League. However they failed to qualify after earning just two points in the final round.
In 2007-2008 season the team managed to retain the decent form of the previous season and reached the final round for the second successive time after finishing as runners-up in Third District Division League, 9 points behind their main rivals Shatin SA. Once again Southern’s attempt to progress was a failure. In 2008 the team finished merely in the fourth place, which was not enough to secure the place in the final round.
Eventually Southern were promoted in 2009-2010 season. They reached the final round after finishing as runners-up. Despite being ranked third in the final round they luckily qualified to the Second Division League as Eastern have decided to withdraw from the competition.
Southern’s first season in the Second division league proved a success as they finished in the top-four, 10 points behind the champions Sham Shui Po and won their first trophy after securing the victory over Double Flower in the Hong Kong Junior Challenge Shield final.
In season 2011-2012 Southern finally progressed to the First Division League, finishing at the second spot, 3 points behind the champions Kam Fung.
Currently Aberdeen Sports Ground is the home ground of Southern District.
