History and achievements
Ternana Calcio is an Italian football club from Terni founded in 1925.
In their early years the club played in lower leagues of Italian football. After the World War II the team found themselves at the bottom of the football pyramid rotating between the 4th and the 5th tiers. In the 1960s, they began to recuperate their lost positions returning to Serie C in 1964 and Serie B in 1968. The 1970s turned to be the glorious era for Ternana as they made their first run into the top flight in the 1972/73 season. However, they won only 3 out of 30 matches and dropped out of Serie A as the bottom-placed club. But the team didn’t lose ground and fought back their ticket to the top flight for the 1974/75 campaign. In that season they didn’t manage to prove their strength as well, this time winning 4 out of 30 games. The team has never threatened to hit those same heights again. In the 1979/80 season, Ternana got a first taste of the Italian Cup action and shaped well in the tournament climbing up to semi-finals.
In the 1980s the team turned out on a downward spiral. They mostly teetered on the brink between Serie C1 and Serie C2 and in 1987 they had to declare their bankruptcy. In the summer 1988, Ternana returned to the footballing arena. In the 2011/12 campaign, they won promotion to Serie B and compete there today.
Such notable players as Paolo Di Canio, Fabrizio Miccoli, Luis Jiménez, Mario Frick and others had their spells at Ternana. The team players are often nicknamed the Red-greens due to the colour of their uniforms. They play their home matches at Stadio Libero Liberati which can hold up to 22,000 spectators.
