History and achievements
Tottenham is a professional football club from London. It was established in 1882 by grammar-school pupils from All Hallows Church. The club received professional status in 1885 and in 1889 moved to the stadium White Hart Lane which 123 years later is still their home ground. The crest of the club depicts a cockerel called Harry Hotspur. The nicknames of the club are the Spurs and Lilywhites. The team received their first title in 1901 winning in the FA Cup final.
The year 1951 was the moment Tottenham took the first title of the Championship, as the prominent players of that time Alf Ramsey, Ronnie Burgess, Ted Ditchburn, Sonny Walters and Bill Nicholson formed a squad that showed spectacular and remarkable performance.
In the yearly 1960s Tottenham was incomparable and unstoppable force either in the English and European football, achieving the FA Cup and the league title in the season 1961/1962. Tottenham clinched the European Cup and the Cup Winners’ Cup in the following two years, becoming the first team from England to win the UEFA competition. The most successful spell in the team’s history brought the club five more FA Cups and the UEFA Cup in the season 1971/1972.
During the following two decades the Spurs mostly stayed in the mid table. But from 2005 onwards the team regularly finished the season in the top five, winning Chelsea in The League Final in 2008. In the season 2010/2011 the club played in the quarter final of the Champions League where it was defeated by Real Madrid 0-5 on aggregate.
In the 2011/2012 season Tottenham with such players as Jermain Defoe, Luka Modric, Gareth Bale and Rafael Van der Vaart in squad stayed in the top 5 of the League.
