Toulouse is a professional football club that was formed in 1970. The home ground of the team is the Stadium Municipal that can hold up to 35,000 supporters. The traditional colors are violet and white and they reflect the nickname of the city ‘la Cité des violettes’ (the City of Violets). The club’s badge includes the Occitan cross which is the emblem of Occitania region where Toulouse is a capital.
In the 1970s Toulouse stayed in Division 2 and it took the club four years to climb to the top of the league and receive promotion to Division 1. Yet throughout the 1970s the team balanced between first two divisions.
Toulouse qualified for the UEFA Cup in 1984 for the first time in its history. Three years later the team finished the 3rd in the League - their highest achievement in the table. During the UEFA Cup campaign the same year Toulouse clashed with Napoli and outperformed the Italian side that was led by Maradona on penalty kicks.
In the 1990s the club faced a decline and was even relegated to Division Two. Furthermore the team underwent a major fiscal upheaval and was close to losing its professional status. Yet the club revived and bounced back to the Ligue 1. In 2008 Toulouse for the first time qualified for the UEFA Champions League but did not reach high level in the tournament. The 2011/2012 season saw Toulouse finishing 8th in the League.
