Tromsø Idrettslag is a Norwegian football club located in Tromsø.
Tromsø was founded on September 15, 1920 under the name of Tromsø Turnforenings Fotballag. In 1931 the club delivered its first silverware as the team won the Northern Norwegian Championship. In 1949 the team duplicated the success. In 1970s Tromsø languished in the third tier. Fifteen years later the Boys earned long-awaited promotion to the top division. The 1989 and 1990 campaigns were the most successful ones. Tromsø claimed silver and bronze medals of the Norwegian Premier League. The club lifted the Norwegian Cup in 1996.
In 2001 Tromsø couldn’t climb out of the relegation zone and consequently fell into Adeccoligaen. The Boys were immediately promoted at the first attempt in 2002. In 2004 the club claimed a fourth-place finish in Tippeligaen and qualified for the UEFA Cup group stage. The 2010 campaign witness Tromsø finish third in the Premier League. In 2013 Tromso were relegated from the top flight.
The team plays in red and white. Alfheim Stadion hosts Tromsø’s home matches.
