Unión Española is a Chilean football club from Santiago Province, Chile. The club was organized by the Spanish immigrants in 1897. It’s a tidbit that it is the second oldest Primera División club after Santiago Wanderers who are five years older.
Unión Española began their way in the amateur leagues of Chilean football system. In May 1933 they were one of the founding members of the professional Primera División de Chile along with Colo-Colo, Santiago Badminton, Audax Italiano, Magallanes and others. The team spent all but two seasons in the top flight since the league inception.
Unión Española tasted their first league honors in 1943. They showed prominent results for the rest of the 1940s finishing as runners-up thrice and made their second league success in 1951. However, the club’s golden age came in the 1970s when they welcomed another three Chilean Primera División titles and won their first ticket to the Copa Libertadores. The farthest they climbed up to in this South American competition was the runner-up position in the 1975 season.
In the 1980s, Unión Española found themselves on a downward spiral. They even spent two seasons in the Primera B. Their fortunes changed again when the team won the Apertura 2005.
Unión Española play their home matches at Estadio Santa Laura-Universidad SEK in Independencia, Santiago, which can hold up to 22,500 people.
