Universidad de Chile

Univesidad de Chile is one of the most successful and the most supported football clubs in Chile based in Santiago. It was founded by the students of the Universidad de Chile in 1927 and was considered the university’s sport team until 1980. In the 1980s the team separated from the university and therewith lost much of economic support. In 1988, Univesidad de Chile slumped to the second tier but soon returned to the top flight again.

The club claimed their first Primera División title in 1940. They were at the pinnacle of fame in the 1960s as they won six league titles since 1959 till 1969. All in all, Univesidad de Chile is the second most honored club in the country after Colo-Colo with 16 league titles and three cups. On the international scene, the team climbed up to the Copa Libertadores semi-finals four times. In 2011, Universidad de Chile were crowned the Copa Sudamericana champions thus recording their maiden international title.

Univesidad de Chile hold longstanding rivalry with Colo-Colo and Universidad Católica. The matches between those sides are called Clásicos. The team players have blue and white kits. They also have a red and white owl as a symbol of knowledge and wisdom on their emblem. They play their home matches at Estadio Nacional Ñuñoa which can host up to 47,000 people.
