Urawa Red Diamonds is a Japanese football club, located in Saitama, Saitama Prefecture. Its name originates from the city of Urawa which is a part of Saitama now. It was founded in 1950 by Shin-Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Kobe and in 1958 the club moved to Tokyo. Along with several other teams in 1965 they formed the Japan Soccer League and in 1969 they won their first JSL title.
Since 1992 Urawa has played in the J. League Division 1, being relegated only once, in 1999. In 2006, they won their first J. League title leaving Gamba Osaka runner-up after a 3-2 win. In 2003, the team won the J. League Cup and in 2005 and 2006 they won the Emperor’s Cup.
Urawa won the 2007 Asian Champions League title and the next year the team reached the semifinals. In 2007, they finished third at the FIFA Club World Cup.
The team had played home matches at Urawa Komaba Stadium since 1992 and after the 2002 FIFA World Cup they use Saitama Stadium, which was built specially for the tournament, as their home ground. Its capacity is 63,700.
