History and achievements
Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama, aka Vasco da Gama, is a football club located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The club takes its name from the famous Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama.
It was formed on August 21, 1898 by Portuguese immigrants. Vasco da Gama`s first attempt to gain entry into the state league was declined by the game`s authorities due to the club`s racist policy. In 1925 it was finally admitted to the league. Now Vasco da Gama along with Flamengo, Fluminense and Botafogo are the giants of the Campeonato Carioca. The club lifted the 1948 South American Championship of Champions and the 1998 Copa Libertadores, marking their 50th and 100th anniversary respectively. Vasco`s total also comprises 4 Brasileirão and 22 Campeonato Carioca titles.
After the glory on the international arena, the club`s form slumped and in 2008 Vasco slipped to the second tier for the first time in its history. Although the next campaign saw Vasco da Gama seal automatic promotion to the main league. In 20113 Vasco were relegated to the second tier again.
The club`s home kit comprises a black shirt accompanied by shorts of the same colour. The shirt is also adorned with a white Cross pattée. The club`s home stadium is called São Januário. It used to be a training ground for the Brazil national team until the construction of the world-known Maracanã Stadium in 1950.
