Club Atlético Vélez Sarsfield is an Argentinean football club located in the Liniers neighborhood of Buenos Aires. The club takes its name from the railroad station, lying nearby.
Vélez was established on January 1, 1910 in the Floresta district of Buenos Aires. The club had played in the amateur championship until the formation of the Argentinean professional league in 1931. Ten years later Vélez suffered its first and solitary relegation to the lower division. Promotion was achieved in 1943. Since that time the club has been a consistent performer in the Primera División.
In 1967 Manuel Giúdice took over as a head coach of the club. In 1968 the new manager guided his side to the first league title. However, the next 25 years were titleless. The glory days returned to Vélez in 1993 when the club clinched the Clausura tournament. Actually, the 1990s belonged to Vélez. During that time the team secured 4 league titles. That period also saw the club lift the 1994 Copa Libertadores, the 1994 Intercontinental Cup, the 1996 Supercopa Sudamericana, the 1996 Copa Interamericana and the 1997 Recopa Sudamericana. In the 1990s the club boasted such master players as José Flores, Mauricio Pellegrino, Omar Asad, Christian Bassedas and José Luis Chilavert. Chilavert is famous both for his world-class saves and brilliant free-kicks. The goalie clutched the World Goalkeeper of the Year award on 3 three occasions.
In 2011 Vélez won its eighth Primera División title.
