History and achievements
Videoton FC is a Hungarian football side from the city of Székesfehérvár. The club competes in the Nemzeti Bajnokság.
Videoton came into being in 1941. It was only in 1967 that the club earned promotion to the top tier. However, the team found life in the top league increasingly tough and Videoton was relegated to the second tier the following season. In 1982 Videoton reached the Hungarian Cup final but suffered a defeat from Újpest. That was just the start of the golden period. The year of 1984 saw the club march splendidly in the UEFA Cup. Ferenc Kovács steered his team to the final after Videoton pulled off a sensational win against Manchester United in the semi-final. However, the club was crushed by Real Madrid in the decisive match of the competition.
All of a sudden, in 1999 the team dropped into the Nemzeti Bajnokság II but made a quick return the following year. In 2006 Vidi lifted the Hungarian Cup after celebrating a penalty shootout victory over Vasas SC. In the 2009/2010 campaign Videoton produced outstanding attacking football and was the main title contender. The team just missed out on the title trophy after a run of defeats at the end of the season.
In the 2010/2011 campaign Videoton was crowned league champions. In 2012 the side finished the championship in the second place. The club’s titles also include 3 League Cups and 2 Super Cups.
Videoton’s traditional colours are red and blue. Home matches are staged at the Sóstói Stadion which has a seating capacity of 14,300 spectators.
