Viking Fotballklubb is a Norwegian football club which represents the city of Stavanger in Tippeligaen. The titles obtained by Viking include 8 Norwegian Premier Leagues and 5 Norwegian Cups. The side has a record number of wins in the top division.
Viking came into being in 1899. In the 1930s the Dark Blues were admitted to the national championship. During the 1950s the club became one of the game headliners in Norway, winning a league title and two domestic cups. Viking was evermore inconsistent in the 1960s. Kjell Schou Andreassen took up the reign at the club in the early 1970s. He guided his side to four consecutive top-flight championships and one Norwegian Cup.
However, in the mid-80s the team’s league form took a dive and Viking fell into the second tier. It was the worst period in the club’s history. The resurgence began in 1988 as the Dark Blues achieved promotion to Tippeligaen. The team went on to win the cup and the league in 1989 and 1991 respectively. In the 2002/2003 UEFA Cup campaign Viking knocked out Chelsea, winning 5-4 on aggregate. In the 2005/2006 season the club progressed to the UEFA Cup group stage.
Magnus Svensson, Brede Hangeland and Thomas Myhre defended the club’s colours. In the 2004/2005 current England boss Roy Hodgson trained Viking.
The team play their home matches at Viking Stadion which has seating for 16,300 spectators.
