Wellington Phoenix FC is a New Zealand professional football club, based in its capital city Wellington.
In 2007 the Nix owner supported by city officials managed to get a license to participate in the Football Federation of Australia A-League. On 26 August 2007 the club debuted in the league with a home game against FC Melbourne Victory. The match ended in a 2-2 draw and commemorated the beginning of a new era in the club’s history.
The club soon became extremely popular within New Zealand football fans and got an immense number of new supporters, who broke all possible attendance records. The record high friendly attendance was cut during the match against FC Los Angeles Galaxy, when a crowd of 31,853 people came to see the play of the worldwide superstar David Beckham. The league attendance record was even more impressive, as 32,792 fans came to the club’s venue to see the historical achievement of their team, when Wellington Phoenix defeated Newcastle United Jets in the the A-League Preliminary Final, becoming the third best team of the competition.
The club’s main kit consists of a shirt covered with yellow and black stripes, black shorts and socks. The away kit is of a white color with yellow elements. The club’s home venue is the Westpac Stadium, which can house up to 36,000 football lovers.
