History and achievements
Wisła Kraków is one of the oldest clubs in Poland. The team was established by the students of the Second Practical School in Kraków in 1906. The club faced an intense competition for the title with 1.FC Katowice in the inaugural season of the League, the 1927/28 season, which ended in a 2-0 win for Wisła Kraków.
The team changed its name several times, so in 1949 they were named Gwardia-Wisła Kraków, in 1955 returned the name of TS Wisła and became GTS Wisła in 1967. In 1990 the club was again named TS Wisła and at the end of 1990s the name was changed to Wisła Kraków SSA.
Wisła Kraków was the team of mixed success before 1998 when they were bought by Tele-Fonika. Since then they have improved their performance significantly and within the following fourteen years they won fourteen league titles. In 2001/02 and 2002/03 they won Polish Cup tournaments, in 2001 they were Polish SuperCup winners, and in 2000/01 they won Polish League Cup.
The best result of the team in the European competitions is the quarter-final of the 1978/79 European Cup, where they were defeated by Malmö FF. In the 2002/03 season Wisła Kraków reached 1/8 finals of the UEFA Europa League. In 1967/68, 1984/85 they were among the last sixteen of the European Cup Winners’ Cup and thrice they won the Intertoto Cup (1969, 1970 and 1973).
The nickname of the team is the White Star. There is a rivalry between Wisła Kraków and KS Cracovia, which counts more than a hundred years and is often called the Holy War, while the matches of the side against Legia Warsaw are also perceived as the most intense rivalry in Poland.
Stadion im. Henryka Reymana is the team’s home ground, it was opened in 1953 and sits up to 34,000 after the reconstruction in 2010.
