History and achievements
FC Wolfsburg was founded on September 12, 1945. It began playing in the same white and green kits as nowadays. After several months from the date of foundation the club was exposed to huge crisis which nearly destroyed the team. All players left Wolfsburg but for the most devoted one, Josef Meyer. And it was him who revived the team together with Willi Hilbert. In one year term a new team was formed. They played their first match against Schalke 04 in 1946 at Volkswagen stadium. Ever since the club has been supported by popular carmaker and has been playing their home matches at this arena.
Step by step Wolfsburg progressed and in 1954 the club defeated Heider SV and got to Oberliga Nord to struggle for survival. It couldn’t last long and in 1959 the club was knocked out of the competition according to results of the season. In 1963 Wolfsburg made another attempt to stay in Oberliga which had been renamed to Bundesliga 2. It took them several years to finish second in table that enabled them for qualifying games as it wasn’t enough to get direct promotion to the elite of German football. The club lost in play-off though.
The 1970s turned out to be complicated for Wolfsburg: it played in amateur tournament of Oberliga Nord. Two consecutive years, in 1991 and 1992 the team triumphed in the tournament but it was only third attempt that saw them through Bundesliga 2. Wolfsburg improved performance year after year and in 1995 got to the German Cup final, but was smashed by Borussia Monchengladbach 3-0. At the end of the season 1996/1997 the club climbed to Bundesliga 1.
Numerous experts predicted the club out from the elite of German football, but the team was strong enough to remain there converting to a solid mid-table club. Under the spell of Wolfgang Wolf in 1999 Wolfsburg finished 6th and got the right to play in European Cups. In the UEFA Cup of 1999 they went past Debrecen (Hungary) and Roda (the Netherlands) to be stopped by Atletico Madrid.
In 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2004 Wolfsburg played in the Intertoto Cup. In 2003 it was just one step off the victory losing to Italian Perugia in the final game. In 2006 and 2007 Wolfsburg was on the verge of being sent to Bundesliga 2 finishing the championship on the 15th position.
Much changed after arriving of former Bayern Munich coach Felix Magath. ‘Iron Felix’ launched the team’s deep rearrangement, leaving nine men outside the squad. And it worked: Wolfsburg became 5th in the championship and played well in the UEFA Cup. And it was just the beginning – in 2009 the club saw unprecedented success claiming the title of National Champion.
