Zorya is a Ukranian football club from the city of Lugansk. The first team in the city appeared in the 1920s when a new stadium was built under the order of Vladimir Lenin. The first club received the name of the leader of the country and existed only for several years. In 1923 the workers of the Luhansk steam train factory organized the football team “Metalist” that became the forerunner of the current club. In 1936 Metalist and Dynamo merged to form a new club “Dzerzhynets” the title that referred to “Felix Dzerzhinsky». The following year the club took the first place in the Ukrainian second league and progressed to the 1/16 round of the Soviet Cup. In 1938 the side won the title of the Ukrainian championship.
The most successful spell in the soviet Top League started in the 1970s, when the club claimed the title of the championship in 1972 and finished as a runner-up in the Soviet Cup in 1974 and 1975.
Zorya did not enjoy much success in the Ukrainian Premier league, facing relegation a couple of times in the 1990s. In the season 2005/2006 the club won the First League and was promoted to the Premier League where they compete to this day.
The home stadium of the club is called Avanhard and sits 22,288 football fans.
