Aleksandrs Starkovs is a former Latvian football player, current coach of the national team of Latvia. Starkovs was born on 26 July 1955 in Madona, Latvia, where he started playing for the local team Olimpija Madona at the age of 14. In 1975 Starkovs was signed by FK Daugava Rīga and after spending 3 seasons in the side joined Dynamo Moscow, though did not manage to secure a place in the first team and returned to Latvia. From 1978 to 1989 the striker played for FK Daugava Rīga, becoming one of the most successful and prominent forward in the Soviet first league. During his 11 seasons in the team he made 417 appearances and netted the ball 189 times.
Starkovs began coaching in FK Daugava Rīga, yet it was his spell in Skonto FC from 1993 to 2004 that brought him recognition and fame. Under his rule the club finished atop of the Latvian championship a number of times. Later the manager was appointed at the position of the manager of Latvia national team and led the side to the Euro 2004.
In 2004 Starkovs was introduced as a head coach of Spartak Moscow and spent two years in the club, bringing the team to the silver medals of the Russian League. In 2007 he was reappointed as Latvia national team coach.
In 2009 he returned to Skonto FC and brought the team to the league title. In 2011 he accepted the offer to coach FK Baku, while continuing to train Latvia at the same time.
