Alexander McLeish is a retired Scottish footballer and a manager. He was born in 1959 in Glasgow and came through the youth ranks of Glasgow United. In January 1978 he made his debut for Aberdeen having already stayed with the reserves during two seasons and a loan-spell at Lewis United juniors. Alex McLeish played for Aberdeen till 1994 and during such a long period they won three Scottish Premier League titles, five times they became Scottish Cup winners and twice they won Scottish League Cup. In 1982/83 they won European Cup Winners Cup and in 1983 they won European Super Cup. He retired from playing after a short spell at Motherwell.
Alex McLeish represented the Scotland national team and from 1980 till 1993 he earned 77 caps.
In 1994 he took over his managerial career at Motherwell and guided them till his move to Hibernian in 1998. He led them to the top division during his first season here and brought the team to the Scottish Cup final in 2000/01. His period at Hibernian was a success and drew attention of other clubs. He got the UEFA Pro Licence while managing Hibernian.
In December 2001, Alex McLeish became the head coach of Rangers, whom he guided till 2006. During that period the team won two Scottish Premier League titles, twice they gained Scottish Cup and three times they won Scottish League Cup.
From January till November 2007 McLeish was responsible for the Scotland national team and then took charge of Birmingham City. There he worked till 2011. He helped them to finish runners-up Football League Championship in 2008/09 and to win Football League Cup in 2010/11.
The 2011/12 season McLeish guided Aston Villa and on 27 December 2012 he was appointed at the helm of Nottingham Forest. After just 7 matches in charge he quit the club.
