Américo Rubén Gallego is former Argentine player and a coach born in 1955 in Morteros.
He began his professional playing career at Newell’s Old Boys, making his debut in 1974, and soon he became a regular player. In 1981, Gallego switched to River Plate and played for the side until 1988 helping them to win their first Copa Libertadores, Intercontinental Cup and Copa Interamericana. He also represented the Argentina national team.
The first team Gallego took charge of was his former River Plate. He led them to the 1994 Apertura win and then for three years he was an assistant coach of the Argentine national team. Gallego returned to River Plate in 2000 and soon they won the Apertura. Then he coached Independiente from 2002 to 2003 until he headed Newell’s Old Boys and led the latest one to the Apertura title in 2004. From 2005 to 2008 he worked in Mexico managing CD Toluca and then Tigres UANL.
In 2009, Gallego returned to Argentina and coached Independiente until June 2010. Since February 2011 he had a short spell in Chilean club Colo-Colo and in 2012 he took charge of Club Atlético Independiente for the third time. This time he lasted for eight months.
