He started out his coaching career with Kuwaiti club Qadsia in 1988. Since then and till 1996, Celso changed an array of clubs such as Arab Al Ahli and Al-Gharafa, and Brazilian Juventus, Internacional, Brasil de Pelotas, Esportivo, Caxias do Sul. His first great success came when his then-club Internacional won Campeonato Gaúcho in 1997. In the 1998/99 season, Roth was at the helm of Grêmio who won the Campeonato Gaúcho and Copa Sul in 1999. In 2000, he led Sport Recife to the Copa do Nordeste victory. In between 2001 and 2010, Roth didn’t record any significant award though he charged many clubs for this period: Palmeiras, Santos, Atlético Mineiro, Goiás, Flamengo, Botafogo, Vasco da Gama. In the 2010/11 season, coaching at Internacional again, Celso led the club to the Copa Libertadores victory. In 2012, Celso Roth took over reins at Cruzeiro.
