James Craig Brown is a retired Scottish footballer. He was born in 1940 in Hamilton, Scotland, and began playing football at Hamilton Academy. Then he played for Rangers’ junior team and when he was 19 moved to Dundee. He stayed with the side four and a half years but during his spell, he wasn’t used regularly. In 1968, Brown joined Falkirk and in 1971 he retired as a player.
In 1974, he took over as an assistant coach of Motherwell and in 1977 he became a part-time manager of Clyde and worked with the team during ten seasons. In 1986, Craig Brown was appointed the assistant coach to Andy Roxburgh, the head coach of the Scotland national team. At the same time Brown guided Scotland’s U16 and U21 teams. In 1993, he became the head coach of the senior national team. Under his rule Scotland qualified to Euro 96 and the 1998 World Cup, but they failed to qualify for Euro 2000 and World Cup 2002 and Brown was sacked in 2001.
From 2002 to 2004 he was at the helm of Preston North End. Then he had an interval in his managerial career and in December 2009 he took charge of Motherwell and in December 2010 he moved to Aberdeen. In 2013 he was replaced by Derek McInnes.
