Elie Baup was born on March 17, 1955 in Saint-Gaudens, France.
Elie began his playing career as La Roche goalkeeper. Later, he appeared in Tolouse FC at the age of fifteen after which he played in AS Mazamet. At the age of 20, Elie had a double neck fracture in a road accident, which put an end to his playing career.
Nevertheless, Baup never left football and in 1982 he got a 2nd degree coaching certificate. His coaching career began in Castelnaudary. This experience later helped him to join AS Saint-Étienne. Fabien Bartez played under his charge at the club for a certain period. In 1985, he helped his team to the French cup final but they lost the game.
In 1991, Elie becomes an assistant for the main squad. In 1997, he got the same position in Bordeaux. There he won his first titles such as national championship in 1998 and league cup in 2002. On October 24, 2003 he was sacked.
Afterwards, he worked in Toulouse (helped the team to play in the UEFA Cup) and Nantes which was almost relegated to the second division, so soon the coach suspended coaching activity. Elie focused on pundit’s work and later, on July 4, 2012, he took the helm of Marseille replacing Didier Deschamps. After a poor start of the season 2013/2014, Baup was sacked in December 2013.
