In between 1991 and 2004, he coached an array of clubs such as Racing Ferrol, Lugo, Compostela, Oviedo, Mallorca, Betis, Las Palmas, Rayo Vallecano and Valladolid. In the 2005/06 season, Vázquez led Celta de Vigo to promotion to the UEFA Cup as they finished sixth in La Liga. After a coaching tenure at Galicia, Vázquez took charge over Deportivo La Coruña in 2013 freshly promoted to La Liga.
