Gadzhi Gadzhiyev was born on 28 October 1945 in Dagestan, USSR. He is a former football player of Spartak Leningrad.
Gadzhiyev began his coaching career as a caretaker at Dynamo Makhachkala in 1972 taking over the reins at the team in 1973. Between 1986 and 1988, he was an assistant coach for USSR Olympic team which bore the palm in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. He also was an assistant of the USSR national team in 1990-1992 and Russia U-21 team between 1992 and 1997.
As a club coach, Gadzhi Gadzhiyev had spells at the helm of Neftchi Baku, Anzhi Makhachkala, Sanfrecce Hiroshima, Krylya Sovetov and Saturn Ramenskoye. In 2012 he ruled the roost at Volga Nizhny Novgorod but later was invited to Krylia Sovetov. However, after the breakup happened in big-spending Anzhi Makhachkala in August 2013, Gadzhi was invited to replace Rene Meulensteen.
