Gavriil Kachalin, a former football player, a football manager, was born in 1911. He began to play for Volny Trud in 1928, then played for Homel, Dynamo Homel and between 1936 and 1942 he played for Dynamo Moscow.
Kachalin guided Trudovye Rezervy Moscow and Lokomotiv Moscow and then took charge of the USSR national team between 1955 and 1958 and then 1960 and 1962. He led the team to the Summer Olympics gold medals in 1956. In 1960 the national team won European Football Championship.
In 1964 Kachalin led Dinamo Tbilisi to Soviet Top League victory, guiding the team in 1964/65 and then in 1971/72. In 1973/74 he was at the helm of Dynamo Moscow and in 1975 had a short spell at Pakhtakor Tashkent. Gavriil Kachalin died in 1995.
