Former professional midfielder Javier Aguirre was born on 1 December 1958 in Mexico City, Mexico.
Javier was a player of such Mexican teams as Club América, Atlante and CD Guadalajara. He was a fantastic asset for América as he helped them to win two consecutive Mexican Primera División titles in 1984 and 1985. As a player, Aguirre also featured for American side Los Angeles Aztecs and for Spanish Osasuna. Since 1983 till 1992, he won 59 caps to the Mexico national team amassing 14 international goals.
Javier Aguirre embarked on his managerial career at the helm of Atlante in 1995. In 2001, as Mexico supremo he led the Mexico national team to the 2001 Copa América finals but eventually lost to Colombia. In 2002, Aguirre moved to Spain where he took charge over Osasuna and then Atlético Madrid helping the latter to win the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2007. After that Javier Aguirre returned to México and recorded the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup together with the national squad. In the 2010/11 season, he found himself as a coach of Real Zaragoza and in November 2012 Aguirre was appointed as the manager of RCD Espanyol. In May 2014 Aguirre was released from the club. Later on he took charge of Japan national football team.
