Jean Fernandez was born on October 8, 1954 in Mostaganem, French Algeria. Apart from Algerian citizenship he also has a French passport. Jean Fernandez is father of David Fernandez – a footballer who began his career in FC Bordeaux de Girondins.
Initially, Jean lived in Algeria together with his parents. But soon after Fernandez Jr. was born, the family moved to France and settled a few kilometers away from Beziers. Jean joined the local club where he revealed his talent and began to ascend the career ladder. Later, he became a Marseille player and won the 1976 French Cup in his second year. Afterwards, he was offered a four-year contract. Soon, Fernandez moved to Bordeaux and spent two seasons there. The last club in Jean’s playing career was Cannes. He played his last match as a footballer in 1984.
At the age of thirty, almost with no appropriate qualification, Jean became director of the Cannes football center. In a year, he assumed responsibilities of the professional team head coach and coached Zinedine Zidane for some time. Soon, he penned a new contract with OGC Nice. The city had a hard time then: financing was inadequate due to political unrest. This made the coach leave for Olympique Marseille where he assisted Franz Beckenbauer and made it to two finals of the UEFA tournaments. Soon, he took charge of Al Nassr FC (Saudi Arabia) but eventually had to return to France to look after his sick mother and joined the local LOSC. After her death, he went back to the Emirates where he stayed for several years. Afterwards, he was in charge of other French clubs and even participated in the UEFA Champions League. After leaving AJ Auxerre, he became AS Nancy head coach on June 2, 2011. In January 2013 he quit his job.
Since July 2013 Fernandez has been in charge of Montpellier.
