John Karelse is a former Dutch goalkeeper and a manager.
Karelse was born on 17 May 1970 in Wemeldinge, Zeeland, and made his first steps in professional football in the local teams VV Wemeldinge and AGOVV Apeldoorn.
In 1986 Karelse was signed by NAC Breda, where he played from 1986 to 1999 and made 382 appearances. His confident and skillful performance drew the attention of Newcastle United coach Ruud Gullit, who persuaded the player to join the English club, yet during 3 seasons in Newcastle Karelse did not become the first choice keeper in the team and in 2003 signed for AGOVV Apeldoorn, where he played for a season, retiring in 2004.
In 2006 Karelse was appointed as an interim coach of NAC and with the side won relegation play-offs, reaching the top flight of Dutch football. In 2011 Karelse was confirmed as NAC head coach. One year later he was released from the post.
