Malcolm George Mackay is a retired footballer and a manager. He was born in 1972 in Bellshill, Scotland, and spent his youth playing career with the academy of Queen’s Park, where he went on playing after graduating. In 1993 he switched to Celtic and stayed with them for five years, making 46 appearances. He was loaned to Norwich City, played one match for them and completed a permanent move. In 2003/04 they won promotion to the Premier League and in 2004 Mackay left the team and joined West Ham United for a fee of £300,000. He played for West Ham one season and made 18 appearances. From 2005 to 2008 he played for Watford and after retirement became their caretaker.
Malky Mackay was appointed the manager of Watford in September 2009 and guided them until 2011, when in June he became the head coach of Cardiff City. Under his rule the team showed good results and in November he was named the Manager of the Month. In 2011/12 Cardiff City finished League Cup runners-up. In 2013 Mackay helped Cardiff finish top of the Championship and be promoted to Premier League for the first time.
Despite showing decent performance, Mackay had personal issues with the club’s owner Vincent Tan and was sacked in December 2013.
