A German coach, Markus Weinzierl was born in Straubing on December 28, 1974.
When a child, Markus began to practice at the local TSV Straubing children’s team. In 1989, he joined the FC Passau youth squad and later played for the senior team there. After a season with SV Lohhof, in 1995 Weinzierl joined FC Bayern Munich (A). In 4 years he joined the team’s main squad but never appeared on the pitch. In 1999, Markus signed a contract with Stuttgarter Kickers and in 2001 – with SpVgg Unterhaching. In 2002, the footballer joined SSV Jahn Regensburg where he finished his playing career in 2005.
In 2006, Weinzierl became SSV Jahn Regensburg assistant head coach and two years later the word ‘assistant’ was omitted. On May 17, 2012 FC Augsburg management announced Markus Weinzierl would be appointed head coach instead of Jos Luhukay.
