Maarten Cornelis Jol was born on 16 January 1956 in the Hague. He is a former midfielder and a manager. Throughout his playing career Jol made over 400 appearances in five different teams.
On 11 October 1980, Martin was capped for the Netherlands national team in the friendly match against the Germany national team. The game was held in the Netherlands, at Philips stadium, and ended in a draw.
On 26 May 2009, Martin signed a three-year contract with Ajax, substituting Marco van Basten, who resigned after one year spent with the club.
On 6 December 2010, basing on a mutual agreement, Jol resigned as Ajax manager. On 7 June 2011, Martin signed a two-year contract with Fulham.
After a poor start to the 2013/2014 campaign Jol was released from Fulham in December 2013.
