Michael Joseph McCarthy is a retired football player, current manager of Ipswich Town. He was born in 1959 in Barnsley, England, and began his professional playing career in 1977 at local Barnsley. In December 1983 McCarthy moved to Manchester City and stayed there till his move to Celtic in May 1987. He was a part of the team winning Scottish Premier League in 1987/88, in 1988 and 1989 they won Scottish Cup trophies.
In July 1989 McCarthy switched to Lyon and in March 1990 he joined Millwall firstly on a loan deal and then completed a permanent move. In 1992 he became a playing coach, in the 1992/93 he made a few appearances and then retired as a player.
On 5 February 1996 he was appointed the manager of the Republic of Ireland national team. Under his guidance the team failed to qualify for the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000, but in 2002 they reached the second round of the 2002 World Cup. He was criticized for a poor start of the Euro 2004 qualifying campaign and in November 2002 he left his post.
In March 2003 McCarthy took charge of Sunderland and guided them till March 2006. In July 2006 he became the manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers. In 2008/09 they won promotion to the Premier League at the expense of QPR, beaten 1-0. The following two seasons they competed in the top flight but in the 2011/12 season they faced a run of poor results which led to sacking of McCarthy in February 2012.
He was appointed at the helm of Ipswich Town in November 2012.
