Nery Alberto Pumpido is an Argentine retired footballer. He was born in 1957 in Monje, Santa Fe, Argentina, and began his playing career Unión de Santa Fe in 1976. From 1981 to 1983 he played for Vélez Sársfield and then moved to Club Atlético River Plate, whom he helped to win their first ever titles, the Argentine Primera División and the Copa Libertadores.
From 1988 till 1990 Pumpido played for Real Betis and in 1991 he returned to Argentina to spend his last season with Unión de Santa Fe and after that he retired.
Since his international debut in the match against Paraguay in 1993 Pumpido represented the Argentine national team until 1990. He helped the team to win the 1986 World Cup and during the 1990 World Cup he broke his leg thus staying aside from football during eight months.
From 1991 till 2001 he was at the helm of Unión de Santa Fe and then took charge of Olimpia Asuncion. Then he headed Tigres de la UANL in Mexico and Newell’s Old Boys. Pumpido had two short spells at Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz and Al-Shabab and then at Olimpia Asuncion, which he used to coach earlier. In 2012, he headed Godoy Cruz and in September he took care of Unión de Santa Fe.
