Paulo Lourenço Martins Alves was born in 1969 in Vila Real, Portugal.
He spent his youth playing career at Vila Real and Porto teams. Alves began his senior career at Gil Vicente and then played for F.C. Tirsense, had two spells at C.S. Marítimo, played for Sporting de Braga, Sporting Clube de Portugal. He had a short loan spell in West Ham, then played for SC Bastia, União de Leiria and finished his playing career at Gil Vicente, where he went on as a manager in 2005.
Paulo Alves represented Portugal Under-20, Under-21 and senior teams. He was a part of the national team, winning 1989 FIFA World Youth Championship in Saudi Arabia.
In 2008, he took charge of União de Leiria for one season and had a short tenure at F.C. Vizela before he headed the Portuguese U20 national team. In 2010, Alves returned to Gil Vicente and led them to the 2010/11 Liga de Honra title. In 2011/12 his team finished second at the Taça da Liga.
Paulo Alves was released from the club in 2013. Later on he was invited to Olhanense.
