Philippe Montanier began his football career in Caen.
In 2004, he worked as assistant coach of the Cote d’Ivoire national team.
In the middle of 2011, Philippe Montanier was offered positions in several clubs simultaneously: Auxerre, Real Sociedad and Bordeaux and preferred to guide the Spanish club.
The season 2012/2013 was a historic one for Real Sociedad and Montanier as the French manager guided the club through to the Champions League for the first time. However, once the season was over, he returned to France joining Rennes.
