Already as a footballer Rene Girard achieved much: playing in the position of midfielder, in 1982 he appeared for the France national team at the FIFA World Cup. In 1980-1988, he played for FC Girondins de Bordeaux and during 8 years he made 241 appearances and scored 17 goals. At the time when Girard was with the team, they became French champions thrice.
In 1988-1991, he played for Nimes Olympique and in 1992 – when he decided to finish his playing career – got the coaching position at the same club.
In 1998-2008, he worked as a coach for the French Football Federation.
And only in 2009, Girard managed to sign a contract with the famous Montpellier HSC where he worked till 2013. At that time he was offered a new job at Lille.
