Sérgio Paulo Marceneiro da Conceição was born in 1974 in Coimbra, Portugal. He started playing football with Associação Académica and Porto’s youth teams. After graduating he played for the second-division teams F.C. Penafiel, Leça FC and F.C. Felgueiras. In 1996, a Portuguese joined F.C. Porto and helped them to win the Portuguese Cup and two Primera Liga titles.
In 1998, Conceição switched to S.S. Lazio and during his first season here he appeared in 33 Serie A games and helped the team to win the 1998/99 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, the 1999 UEFA Super Cup, 1999/2000 Serie A title, Italian Supercup and Italian Cup. He played for the club until 2000 and then he moved to Parma A.C. for a season. After that Conceição spent two seasons with F.C. Internazionale Milano and in 2003 he returned to Parma A.C. for a season.
In 2004, he moved to Belgium and signed a contract with Standard Liège and was awarded with the Belgian Golden Shoe in his first season there. He helped the team to finish the 2006–07 Belgian Cup runner-up and in 2007 he left the club for a Kuwait club Qadsia SC but didn’t stay here for a long time and moved to Greece, where he played for PAOK Thessaloniki till his retirement.
Conceição was capped 56 times and scored 12 goals for the Portugal national team.
Sérgio Conceição started his managerial career at S.C. Olhanense in 2012 but in 2013 switched to Academica de Coimbra. In 2014 he took charge of Braga.
