Serse Cosmi was born on 5 May 1958 in Perugia. He did not play football at professional level, taking part in amateur teams Cannara, Deruta, Spello and Pontevecchio.
His coaching career started in 1980s when he became the manager of Pontevecchio and manager to promote it from 4th amateur league to Serie D. After a stint in Arezzo where he also helped the club to climb from Serie D to Serie C1, Cosmi was appointed as a boss of Serie A team Perugia, subsequently guiding the team for four seasons and claiming the UEFA Intertoto Cup.
The next club in his career was Genoa that under his help went from Serie B to Serie A.
From 2005 to 2011 the manager worked with such clubs, as Udinese, Brescia, Livorno, Palermo, Lecce, not managing to achieve much with those teams.
Serie A side Siena appointed Cosmi as a head coach on 27 June 2012 but in the middle of the season fired the manager.
