Sigi Schmid is an American coach of German descent born on 20 March 1953 in Tübingen, Germany.
Sigi began playing football at UCLA Bruins. He was a starting midfielder of the team during the four seasons since 1972 till 1975.
In 1977, Schmid took up coaching when he was appointed an assistant at his feeder university club UCLA Bruins. In between 1980 and 1999, he ruled the roost as the head coach of the team leading them to three College Cup victories during his tenure. Thanks to his terrific work and contribution, Schmid was established as the club’s legendary coach.
Schmid was in charge of the United States U-20 team for several seasons. In 1999, he took over reins at the top-flight MLS club Los Angeles Galaxy. Already in his debut 1999 season with the club Sigi got the MLS Coach of the Year award. He had a wondrous 2002 season leading the team to the MLS Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup wins.
Since 2006 till 2008, Sigi Schmid was at the helm of Columbus Crew. Due to his immense credit, the club beat New York Red Bulls 3-1 in the MLS Cup final and won the tournament in the 2008 season. Schmid earned his second MLS Coach of the Year title.
The American coach took charge over Seattle Sounders FC in their 2009 inaugural season and rules the roost at the club till today.
