A former Croatian footballer Slaven Bilić was born on 11 September 1968 in Split, Croatia.
He began his football career at a hometown Hajduk Split. Later on Bilić played as a defender for the German side Karlsruher SC and top-flight English clubs West Ham United and Everton. Between 1992 and 1999, he was a regular international for the Croatia national team amassing 44 appearances in total.
In 2001, Slaven Bilić took up coaching having a five-month spell at Hajduk Split. From 2004 till 2006, he was in charge of the Croatia U-21 national team and then had a six-year stint at the helm of the Croatia national team. Under Bilić the squad broke into the UEFA Euro 2008 quarter-final losing 1-3 on penalties to Turkey. The team has also qualified for the UEFA Euro 2012 final tournament.
From 2012 to 2013 Slaven Bilić ruled the roost at FC Lokomotiv Moscow from the Russian Premier League. After being released for the club he was offered a job at Besiktas.
