Stefano Colantuono started playing in Serie D in 1981, appearing in the club Velletri. In a few years he moved to Termana and later to Arezzo, though it was Pisa that provided him with the opportunity to play in the top flight of Italian football. He played in Serie A several times, but starting from 1991 has been staying mostly in the clubs from Serie C2 and Serie D.
In 2001 Colantuono was playing for Sambenedettese in Serie C2, but during the season he was appointed as a playing manager. He promoted the side to Serie C1 and later climbed to the fifth place there, thus starting his coaching career with exceptional success. Afterwards the manager trained such teams as Catania, Perugia, Palermo and Torino.
Atalanta under his helm showed rational football in the season 2011/2012 and was promoted to the top division.
